Akaka is the most spectacular of several waterfalls along the northeast coast of the island on the highway from Wiameia to Hilo. Cruise ships anchor in Kailua Bay and passengers are brought to the pier by tender boat. The pier is located on Alii Drive near the heart of Kailua-Kona and within easy walking distance of most attractions. Tenders will take you from your cruise ship to the small pier at Kailua Village, where shuttles sent by shopping malls and car rental companies are waiting. Renting a car is the preferred way to get around, it’s inexpensive if you book in advance and all the sights are easy to navigate and within close proximity. If your time is limited, there are a couple of beaches and other points of interests close to the port. Honomalino Bay (on the Big Island's / Hawaii Island's southwestern coast) is located south of Milolii (fishing village). The bay has a half-mile-long black-sand beach and is accessible only by boat (ship) or by foot (from the village). The beach (aka "salt-and-pepper beach") is lined up with high palm trees. A short hike to Honomalino Bay passes through a rainforest, also crossing lava flows from Mauna Loa (active volcano).
There is no good or bad time to visit Kona, which is a plus. However, some activities, such as whale watching, are seasonal and can only be done between January and March.
